  • Beschrijving: A man is seen applying lather to his beard in front of a mirror as he prepares to shave. Suddenly, his reflection in the mirror is replaced by a series of grotesque and terrible faces, much to the annoyance of the protagonist who looks at the camera in indignation. After several attempts at shaving, he finally smashes the mirror into a thousand pieces in a fit of pique. The film forms part of what is known as 'cinema of attractions', successor to the popular shows of the late nineteenth century. Beyond a simple narrative, the film seeks to astound and amaze the audience through a series of visual tricks: transformations, overlays, substitutions and reverse motion, among other effects. The main character constantly refers to the audience throughout the film, using gestures as a device to draw them in, seeking their complicity at all times.
